"Is Your Classroom Current?" is a professional development workshop designed to equip educators with the skills and activities necessary to keep their classrooms relevant and impactful for today’s learners. Participants will explore how to reach students in ways that resonate with their daily experiences, like social media and text threads, to foster respectful and informed perspectives. Through engaging activities, real-life scenarios, and practical tools, educators will gain resources to make these essential topics meaningful and modern in their classrooms.

Male Survivors of Sexual Violence
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST

The overwhelming cultural perception of consent is largely focused on female identified partners giving consent. It is critically important that we uplift the voices and experiences of a diversity of survivors in order to foster safety and supportive resources to all. In this session, we will share our new short film discussing the experience of a male survivor and helping to dispel the myth that young men can't experience assault or unhealthy relationships. We will invite participants to learn and share ways to reduce myths and increase access to healing and support in their schools and among their peers.

Militarizing Rape: Case Studies of Colonial Violence
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST
TBA
This presentation aims to discuss the concept of "historical amnesia" and the use of rape as a weapon of colonization by taking students through three case studies of colonial violence in North America, French Algeria, and Israel. At the GDS conference, it's important to talk about what it means to be a survivor, and the community, present and historical, that you embrace in your healing/life post-assault. There is an extensive history of colonies utilizing rape and gendered violence to facilitate their colonies and subdue Indigenous populations through trauma. Through discussing this history, we hope to prompt critical thinking about the following: Who are the survivors of colonial and genocidal sexual violence? Why are their stories important, and what does it tell us about colonialism at large? How do these colonial empires go about revising and rewriting these histories, and how does this remind us of our modern-day silencing structures and how they operate to perpetuate rape culture, protect rapists, and suppress survivor voices?

“You Exist in the Context”: The Missing Piece of Sex Ed
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST

Many of us received education around consent that focused simply on understanding yes vs. no. This model fails to account for the influence that systems of power, privilege, and oppression have in shaping what we want, what we like, and how we communicate. In this session, we will dive into this critical aspect of consent education and reflect on how we could develop more effective sex education.

Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST

Every statistic represents a real story, and how we choose to share those stories matters. In this workshop, we’ll explore the principles of ethical storytelling, focusing on how to amplify survivor voices without centering ourselves in their narratives. Through discussion and practical exercises, we’ll examine how to tell stories in ways that empower survivors, honor their experiences, and respect their boundaries. Rated R(ead): From Hogwarts to Handmaid's Tale—Sex and Censorship in Banned Books
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST
TBA
Join us for a relaxed, interactive workshop where we’ll explore how banned books tackle themes of sexuality, desire, and identity—and why these books often land on the banned list in the first place. We’ll kick things off with a fun game called "Bible or Banned Book" where we’ll read surprising passages, and you’ll guess whether they’re from a classic banned book or the Bible. After that, we’ll dive into some key excerpts from banned literature and have an open discussion on why these portrayals of sexual experiences make people uncomfortable, what they say about society, and why they matter. This is a safe, judgment-free zone to explore how literature can challenge norms and open up conversations about identity and relationships. Perfect for readers, writers, and anyone curious about what gets books banned—and why it’s worth talking about.

Sexual Health Education Is Life Long Learning
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST
TBA
I will share my journey as a sexual health educator, including the growth and evolution in my understanding. This will be a candid retelling, and you are encouraged to ask questions throughout to determine how to approach education authentically. I will guide you on how to center the most marginalized and bring yourself into education. Inspired by the youth, especially those on my Youth Advisory Board, I’ve learned what equitable youth/adult partnership entails. You can determine where you are on the ladder. I am encouraged by Black women and often utilize their research in my work. One research study led to identity-based discussions that flip risk factors into prevention tactics. I’m motivated by the desire to harm through education, so I’m sharing my conversation template for you to bring to your community. I will breakdown the B.A.S.I.C.S. of comprehensive sexual health education which includes consent. Then we will discuss what you want to focus on in your school community. Regardless of whether you’re building the foundation or gaining greater depth of understanding, during the session, you can sketch a plan. You’ll be able to build skills to advocate alongside others while continuously educating ourselves and our communities.

Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST

The Man Box session de-constructs the collective socialization of men and boys. We examine the impact of social norms, culture, and traditional images of manhood that have created an environment that supports, tolerates and often encourages male dominance, aggression and discrimination toward women, girls, and non-binary people. We will articulate how the Man Box perpetuates sexism and inequality, and how embracing and promoting a healthy, respectful masculinity will prevent dating violence, gender based harassment, sexual assault, gun violence, bullying, and other social ills. The session provides insight into the construct of sexism from an intersectional lens and challenges the privileges and entitlements given to men by men and those attitudes and behaviors are passed down to our boys.

Women and Color and Consent: How History and Media Shape How We Think About Consent
Saturday November 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EST
TBA
This workshop will talk about the history of consent for women of color. We aim to discuss the history of sexual violence and consent towards black women with history about times of enslavement and how black women's innocence has been stripped from them over centuries and how such notions feed into how we view women of color giving consent today. We will also present history about other marginalized groups and provide context for the pieces of media we will use as examples for how women of color are oppressed and how consent is altered for them. We will then go into discussion about both the history and media and present general discussion questions for the group.

Are You Ready to Transform Your Community?
Saturday November 23, 2024 12:50pm - 1:50pm EST
TBA
Join this session to ensure you’ve built a solid foundation for intersectional advocacy. I will outline ten steps to build understanding, center those disproportionately impacted, and mobilize for change. Using my experience as a sexual health educator and reproductive justice advocate, I’ll provide concrete examples for each step, allowing you to identify your current stage and prepare for the next.

We’ll explore the interconnected factors influencing positive or negative outcomes, such as access to comprehensive sexual health information, the right to make informed choices, and community support after an experience of harm. You’ll get a preview of my sexual health education model, set to be published in 2025. This model identifies distinct influences on behavior across five contexts. You'll be able to determine the most effective approach for you to meet individual needs.

Together, we’ll discuss strategies to address personal characteristics, compound factors, health perspectives, and essential skills that support healthy sexual development. You’ll also gain insights into creating identity-based discussion groups, programs, and curricula that can be implemented in your school community. Finally, we’ll work through addressing your concerns, ensuring your community is prepared, and developing a sustainable plan for meaningful change.

Thinking Grassroots: Students of Mutual Aid
Saturday November 23, 2024 12:50pm - 1:50pm EST
TBA
This presentation aims to discuss and teach the power of a grassroots approach to organizing by discussing how we as students and survivors can mobilize and show up for our larger community. With the recent election causing rape culture to be increasingly normalized, we must examine action items to get organized under our systemic oppressors. Using a foundation of intersectionality, we hope to consider the disproportionate impacts on marginalized communities, as we discuss our positionality and privilege. These tools will help us to strategically offer our energy and volunteer our time where it is most useful.

Hands-on Healing: Exploring Art, Activism, and Mindfulness with Clay
Saturday November 23, 2024 2:00pm - 2:50pm EST
TBA
Engage in the calming and grounding experience of working with clay in this hands-on workshop. Together, we’ll explore how art-making can enhance emotional well-being, foster mindfulness, and promote healing. Through the tactile and meditative process of shaping clay, participants will connect with their senses, cultivate a mind-body connection, and discover the power of non-verbal expression.

Inspired by projects like The Clothesline Project and The Monument Quilt, we will also explore how art can illuminate personal stories, spark dialogue, and create awareness around social issues.

Participants will create clay ribbons as symbols of healing and shared understanding. Each ribbon will carry individual designs, textures, or messages that reflect personal journeys and collective resilience. These ribbon sculptures will then be gifted to survivors who donated clothing for the summit's art installation, created in partnership with "I Have The Right To."

No prior clay experience is necessary—just an open heart and a willingness to create!
